SCRCHA Second Show of the Year

Southern California Reined Cowhorse Association lucked out with weather for their second show of the year. We dodged the rain before and after the show, and had dry footing in a covered arena to show off our cowhorses to judge Sandy Jirkovsky.

Friday’s cutting and herd work classes we’re competitive and hard won. The cattle were fast, and the competitors were gritty! Elizabeth ‘Buffy’ Young aboard Pitch Till You Win took home first in Open Cutting. Cats Gotta Gunner ridden by Vickie L Hart won the Non Pro Cutting class. In Open Herd Work, Roy Rich aboard Rocking J Ranch’s Very Smart Luck and Paul Yoder’s DragnReys tied for 1st and 2ndwith a 73. Vanessa Stevens riding her own Smokin N Smooth took home first in Non Pro Herd Work with a 73, which earned her the first leg in her victorious run for Non Pro Boxing Spectacular Champion! The Youth Herd Work rewarded Cee Mr Cats Merada and Hayes Stroschein for their successful high score.

The weather on Saturday was excellent, the nicest day all month! We had our first inaugural Leadline class on Saturday, that was a definite crowd favorite. The young buckaroos looked great in their western attire and on their well turned out mounts. The class was so successful, we will hold it again in May and are adding a Walk Trot Class! It is so rewarding to foster the next generation of cow horse enthusiasts!

Our Saturday and Sunday classes had a great turn out. Our horses were fresh with the incredible amount of rain keeping them stall bound for a time! Saturday’s Open Bridle was won by SJR Smooth Cadillac with Roy Rich aboard and Sunday’s won by Chuy Roman aboard Half Past Boon, both horses owned by Rocking J Ranch. Chuy was also awarded Open Spectacular winner aboard Rocking J Ranch’s RJ Piano Man. The Ltd Open Bridle rewarded Rob Grumann aboard his mare Rowdy Lil One Time on Saturday and Caitlyn Showalter riding Grace Davis’ Seven S Reyncheck on Sunday. Int Non Pro Bridle was won by K’Lynn Occhipinti on RJ Smoke Onthe Water on Saturday and Rachel Reedy on Uno Whats Wright on Sunday. Ruth Noring swept the Novice NP Bridle Division for Saturday and Sunday aboard Mister Olena Chic, earning a Circuit Championship. The Non Pro Bridle was won by Lisa Fonden aboard RJ Wheres My Sock on Saturday, earning her the Non Pro Spectacular Champion. Sunday’s Non Pro Bridle class was won by Nicole Donahoo, on Very Smart Pearl, this pair also taking the blue in Youth Cow Horse on Sunday. Sylyr Jonkey aboard Wright on Holly Time won the Youth Cowhorse on Saturday.In the Youth Boxing class, standout pair Gabriana Wagner riding JA Peekaboo Pep, won both Saturday and Sunday, earning Circuit Champions! Open Two Rein was won by Roy Rich on Candy Flock’s RR Justa Merada both days. Non Pro Two Rein was won by Quentin Pickett on RR Simple Man for both days. Sunni McCormick riding Suzette Overgaag’s Getting Around won Saturday’s Snaffle Bit, and Nicolas Barthelemy won Sunday’s class aboard Heart Breyker for White Tail Ranch Performance Horses. The Box Drive class was won by Linda Kiernan aboard FTR Smart Smoke on Saturday, and Amy Diener on Sunday riding RR Brown Eyes Girl.

The Non Pro Boxing Divisions had the most entries with Vanessa Stevens winning on Saturday riding All That Boon and Sue Carter on her gelding Von Halo Nic on Sunday. The Int Non Pro Boxing was won by Natascha Benz Stevenson on Saturday riding Sweet Little Ruby and Paul Baker aboard Spark N Dixie on Sunday. Paul also won the Ltd Non Pro Boxing on Sunday with Spark N Dixie, with Jessica Mohr victorious in Saturday’s class. The Select Non Pro Boxing class was swept with Sue Carter aboard Von Halo Nic taking the blue for both Saturday and Sunday, earning her a Circuit Champion.

Saturday’s classes were followed by a well attended and fun exhibitor pizza party.  Wine was poured by owners Alan and Kay Needles. They were very welcoming as they shared their delicious vintages and stories about their rich history in Reining and Reined Cowhorse. We handed out the 2022 gear and buckles and awards.

Our May Show is our Jimmy Flores, Sr. Memorial Show, held at Green Acres Ranch in Temecula. It will be spread over four full days of classes starting May 11ththrough 14th. We will have Open, Non Pro and Boxing Spectaculars with iconic Jimmy Flores Hackamore trophies awarded to Champions.
