SCRCHA Cowhorse Kick Off

Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association started off 2023 with a great show January 6-8th! The rainfall of the previous week had everyone wondering how sloppy the venue would be.  We were pleased to find the parking for rigs at California Ranch Company on firm footing, and of course, with covered arenas, the showing was wonderful!

Friday’s Open Herd had Roy Rich taking the blue aboard Paul Yoder’s Dragnreys, with Jesus Roman in second riding Half Past Boon for Rocking J Ranch. The combination of the three events throughout Friday and Saturday earned Roy and Dragnreys the Open Spectacular award. The Open Bridle and Senior Cowhorse was won by Jesus Roman aboard RJ Piano Man, owned by Rocking J Ranch. Limited Open Bridle was won by Caitlyn Showalter aboard her own Shesa Special Pastel. Watch for this talented duo at the Art of the Cowgirl’s World’s Greatest Horsewoman later this month in Arizona!

Saturday morning’s cutting classes were won by Mark Gaiser on Spark N Boom in Open and Eric Trostad on Rey Hogan in Non Pro. Non Pro Herd work was won by Lisa Fonden aboard RJ Wheres My Sock with Ruth Noring taking second on Mister Olena Chic. SCRCHA added a new class for the young riders – and the Youth Herd was won by Alexandria Zingg aboard Frankly Ima Boon.

Saturday’s Non Pro bridle classes saw some familiar faces with Ruth Noring aboard her Mister Olena Chic taking the blue in Intermediate and Level 1 and Danielle Stanton winning Non Pro Bridle aboard her horse, Go Tell That Fox. Ruth’s victories garnered her the Non Pro Spectacular award. The Youth showed their skill in cow horse with Skylyr Jonkey winning Youth Boxing and Hayes Stroschein winning Junior Youth Boxing. The Two Rein classes were won by Dustin Turk in the Open aboard Wright on Holly Time for owners Rocking J Ranch and the Non Pro by Cynthia Capetillo on her Tisa Sweet Kiss.

Saturday’s Non Pro Boxing classes had Cynthia Capetillo on Tisa Sweet Kiss winning the Intermediate (formerly 5K) and Jessica Mohr on CP Smokin Boon winning the Limited (formerly 1K). The Non Pro Boxing and Select Non Pro Boxing were won by Sue Carter riding her Von Halo Nic, which earned her the Non Pro Boxing Spectacular title. The Box Drive Box class was won by Janet Minehan riding her horse Bosses Day.

Sunday we were back at it showing judge Jason Hershberger what our Southern California horses can do! Jesus Roman aboard Half Past Boon was awarded first in Open Bridle, and Rob Grumann took first in Limited Open Bridle on LilRowdyOneTime. Craig Cowley brought home  a first place check for his win in  Open Two Rein aboard Home Creek Twilight Cat. Non Pro Bridle had some big scores with K’Lynn Occhipinti riding her RJ Smoke On The Water to take first in Intermediate and Level 1 NP Bridle. Danielle Stanton won the NP Bridle on her Go Tell That Fox.

Sunday’s Youth competition rewarded standout runs by Hayes Stroschein and Sklylr Jonkey. Non Pro Boxing was dominated by Candy Flock aboard her Say No Way. Paul Baker won the Limited Boxing aboard his Spark N Dixie with Linda Kiernan taking first in Box Drive Box on FTR Smark Smoke.

The Ranch Riding classes were well attended and Roy Rich won first on Moonshiners Light in Junior Ranch Riding and AQHA Jr Ranch Riding for owner Wendelin McClintock. Roseann Cowley won a big class of Senior Ranch Riding for owner Mary Kay Manion’s Shining My Crome.  Ashley Taylor won Amateur Ranch Riding on Lightning Reys and Linda Kiernan The AQHA RR aboard FTR Smart Smoke. Johnny Flores showed Sanjos Nifty Angel to a win in Youth Ranch Riding.

We look forward to our next show March 17-19 at Tucalota Creek Ranch, where they have a great indoor show pen.  We will be having an exhibitor party and handing out the well deserved 2022 Year End Award Buckles.  Check out our website or FB page to stay up to date on events and pertinent information.  Hope to see you there!
