A Reyl Rebel and Nick Dowers Win Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Futurity Championship in 2022; Dowers third Reno Open Futurity Championship

The 6th annual Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity continued the cow horse tradition on the West Coast, Sept. 14-18, 2022 at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Event Center in Reno, Nev. Reined cow horse trainers, owners, non pro competitors, western trade show vendors and cow horse enthusiasts made their annual trek to Reno for the triathlon of the western world.

Open Futurity Divisions: Dowers wins champion and reserve champion titles in Open Futurity

Nick Dowers, from Dyer, Nev., took home his third Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Open championship title riding A Reyl Rebel with a composite score of 656.5 (218 out of the herd, 213.5 in the rein work, and 225 down the fence). A Reyl Rebel is a 2019 gelding by Metallic Rebel and out of Never Reylinquish, and is owned by Clint Marshall.

Dowers and Republicat won a check for $35,000, a championship Waterford Crystal sponsored by Markel Insurance, a gold buckle sponsored by Lone Oak Large Animal Veterinary Services, Inc., and a variety of other prizes.

Dowers first won the Open title in 2019 riding Smart Shiney Playboy, a gelding owned by Marshall, and in 2021 riding Rebulicat, a stallion by Metallic Cat and out of Play Corn, owned by Triple D Ranches.

Taking home the reserve championship title and a check for $19,000 was Clayton Edsall, riding Moondance Cat with a composite score of 652 (223 out of the herd, 213 in the rein work, and fence score of 216). The pair also took home a buckle sponsored by J&S Farms and Skyline-Vaquero Silversmiths. Moondance Cat is a 2019 stallion by Metallic Cat and out of Maliblu Barbie.

Dowers and Shane Steffen tied for third place in the Open Futurity, each winning $10,500 on a composite score of 650.5. Steffen finished third on Voodoo Sweetheart (a 2019 mare by Shiners Voodoo Dr and out of Very Smart Sweetheart), owned by Joyce Pearson. Dowers was riding Oasis Divide (a gelding by Time For The Diamond, out of Stylin Tonette), owned by Triple D Ranches.

The 2022 Intermediate Open Futurity championship title went to Smoke A Smarty and Lyn Anderson, from Madera, Calif., with a composite score of 646.5 (213 in the herd, 214 in the rein work, and 219.5 down the fence). Smoke A Smarty and Anderson won a check for $15,000, a championship Waterford Crystal sponsored by Brother Jackson, and a gold buckle sponsored by Reno-Sparks Livestock Event Center and SC Ranch, Co., Inc.. Anderson and Smoke A Smarty were also seventh in the Open Futurity, adding another $5,000 to the 2022 Reno earnings. Owned by Anderson, Smoke A Smarty is a 2019 gelding by WR This Cats Smart, out of She Smokes Smart.

The Intermediate Open Futurity reserve championship was split three ways between Ron Emmons, Chris Krieg and Ken Wold, with composite scores of 644.5. Each took home a check for $5,966.66. The three also tied for ninth in the Open, adding an additional $2,987.50 to their 2022 Reno earnings. Emmons showed Hesa Shady Oak 319 (a gelding by Olena Oak, out of Shesa Little Pleaser), owned by Cornelia Smithson; Krieg showed Bet Heza Prize (a gelding by Bet Hesa Cat, out of Lenas Gun A Smokum), owned by Kristy Johnson; and Wold showed Sheza Jackson (a mare by Brother Jackson, out of Shesa Catty Lady), owned by Megan Eckert and Teddy Athan.

Melvin Helmuth and DT Shiny N I Know It rode into the winner’s circle for both the Limited Open Futurity and Level 1 Open Futurity championship titles. DT Shiny N I Know It is a 2019 stallion by Hickory Holly Time and out of Lil Miss Shiney Chex, owned by DT Horses LLC. With a composite score of 641.5, the duo marked a 214.5 in the herd work, 215 in the rein work, and 212 down the fence. Helmuth and DT Shiny N I Know It won $5,000 for their Limited Open championship and $2,100 for the Level 1 Open championship.

Geez and Paul Bonnello took won the reserve championship title in both the Limited Open and Level 1 Open Futurity divisions with a composite score of 637.5 . Geez is a gelding by Reyzin The Cash, out of Pretty Smooth Cat, and is owned by Justin McMorrow. The pair took hom $3,100 for their Limited Open earnings, and $1,680 for their Level 1 finish.

Non Pro Futurity Divisions: Bet N On The Oak E and Cynthia Bias win Non Pro & Intermediate Non Pro Futurity championships

Bet N On The Oak E and Cynthia Bias took home both the 2022 Non Pro Futurity and Intermediate Non Pro Futurity championship titles with a composite score of 639 .5 (214.5 in the herd work, 212.5 in the rein work, and 212.5 down the fence). Bet N On The Oak E is a 2019 mare by Bet Hesa Cat and out of Annie Oak E, and is owned by Bias. The champions won a check for $20,000 for their Non Pro win, sponsored by JJ Fisher Construction Inc. and Gotta Go Get It/4-D Ranch, and $2,308.50 for the Intermediate Non Pro, bringing their total 2021 Reno winnings to $22,308.50.

Nacho Librey and Eric Freitas took home the reserve championship title in the Non Pro Futurity division with a composite score of 636. They received a check for $12,500. Nacho Librey is owned by Freitas, and is a 2019 gelding by WR This Cats Smart and out of Reylishious.

Travalen Outlaw and Michael Honald were reserve champions in the Intermediate Non Pro Futurity with a composite score of 633. They took home a check for $1,923.75. Travalen Outlaw is a 2019 gelding by Shiney Outlaw, out of Travalen Easter, and is owned by Honald.

Bet Sheza Mister and Mason Beal rode away from Reno with the 2022 Level 1 Non Pro Futurity championship title. Beal and Bet Sheza Mister (a 2019 mare by Bet Hesa Cat and out of Shesa Mister Dual Pep, and owned by Ernie Beal) had a composite socre of 609.

The Level 1 Non Pro Futurity reserve championship was secured by Onetime Peptoleena and Morgan Rogers, winning $1,280. Margaritas At Noon is a 2019 gelding by One Time Pepto and out of Cats Peptolena, and is owned by Rogers.

The 2022 Non Pro Boxing Futurity championship title went to Shiney N Klass and Shelly Mitchell, with a composite score of 630 (210 in the herd, 210 in the rein work, and 210 in the boxing). The champions won a check for $3,120. Shiney N Klass is a 2019 gelding by Shiney Outlaw, out of Cut N Klass, and owned by Mitchell.

Metallic Rey Cat and Cathy Bardos were the Non Pro Boxing Futurity reserve champions with a composite score of 625. The pair won a check for $2,600. Metallic Rey Cat is a 2019 gelding by Stevie Rey Von, out of Peek A Boo Jule, and owned by Bardos.
