SHERRI GILKERSON MEMORIAL BRIDLE AND HACKAMORE SPECTUCALAR- PAYS OUT $40,000 +
The Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Bridle and Hackamore Spectacular & Wine Country Classic Cow Horse Classic took place in Temecula, California from May 14-16, 2010. Cow horsers from all over the southwest turned out to compete and to celebrate trainer Sherri Gilkerson’s contributions to the cow horse world. Sherri passed away after a horse related accident in 2006. This event marked the fourth annual memorial show.
Entries for the spectacular events were strong, totaling 72 entries. A bridle or hackamore “spectacular” includes three events: herd work, reining and cow work. Each event is scored separately, and then the scores are added together to determine the winner.

Doug Williamson Wins 2010 NRCHA Hackamore Classic Open on Smart Miss Merada |
For the second year in a row, Doug Williamson and Smart Miss Merada won the Open Championship at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Hackamore Classic. The Hackamore Classic is unique among the family of NRCHA Premier Limited Age Events in that it requires an entry to only be shown in the hackamore, while other events also allow for a snaffle. The challenging event celebrates the second stage of the traditional vaquero style of training cow horses. “It’s really awesome to win this event back-to-back on the same horse,” said Williamson. “Her heart is as big as can be – she will dig in and get you a win.”

Ron Ralls Wins 2010 NRCHA Open Stakes on CD Dee Vee Dee/Justin Wright and Cash It Johnny Top Intermediate Open/Kyle Trahern and MH Bold Intentions Win Limited |
The Finals of the 2010 National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes were held on Sunday, March 28. The payout for the Open divisions exceeded $183,000, and Ron Ralls, riding for Shannon and Hershel Reid, won over a third of that! Riding the Reid’s CD Dee Vee Dee, Ralls won the Stakes title, worth $29,250. Ralls and the 5-year-old gelding began with a 215 in the herd work, but came back strong with a 226 in the rein and 225 in the fence work. “He was real nice in the herd work. He just does it in the rein work. He just goes out there and when you send him down the pen, the harder you send him, the harder he stops,” Ralls said. “I didn’t stay very long on the end in the cow work, and we had a big first turn. It was just his typical deal – or what seems to be.” If Ron seems to be learning about CD Dee Vee Dee, it’s because he’s only been riding the 5-year-old gelding, by CD Lights out of Shiners Missy Jay, for a little over a month. The Reids purchased CD Dee Vee Dee from Carol Rose, whose head trainer, Jay McLaughlin, showed the horse at the NRCHA Celebration of Champions, winning the Circle Y Ranch Derby and the Open Hackamore World Championship. “He’s a funny horse. He just goes out and does his job. I guess that’s what I like most about him. He might not feel as good warming up as some of them do, but when he goes in the pen, he just works. He’s kind of freaky.”

Randy Paul Wins 2010 NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman on Smokeelan
The Championship of the National Reined Cow Horse Association World’s Greatest Horseman contest held at the First Community Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas, came down to the very last run. The four-event competition ended with Randy Paul being crowned as the World’s Greatest Horseman. Paul rode Smokeelan, owned by Jill Smiekel George, to the title.
Paul and Smokeelan, by Elans Playboy out of Smart Little Smokee, began the finals competition with a herd work run that placed him in a tie for seventh place. “I felt my horse wanted to be good in everything, but I had a little trouble getting good cattle in front of him. We were just average – but nothing bad happened so we were ok,” he explained.

Anne Reynolds and Shiney And Verysmart Win 2009 Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Championship/McKenzie Merrill and Ill Be Skeets Take Intermediate Non Pro Title |
Friday, October 2, was a day of anticipation, heartache, defeat, and victory at the Reno Livestock Events Center. As the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro finalists began the cow work, it was clearly a horse-race between three contestants. Coming in as draw two was four-time NRCHA Non Pro Champion Anne Reynolds on her horse, Shiney And Verysmart. The pair had already set the pace in the herd and rein work, marking a 216 in the herd and following that with a 219 in the rein work to gain a one-point lead after the rein work. With the championship within reach, Reynolds and Rick (Shiney And Verysmart) managed to score 216. “The fence work was shaping up to be 75s, but we had trouble getting up to the cow in the circles. I’m pleased though, because I did the best I could.”

Todd Bergen Wins 2009 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Hackamore on Nics Black Diamond |
It’s hard to believe that Nics Black Diamond has not won a Championship at a National Reined Cow Horse event. Although the 5-year-old stallion has made the finals at every event he has been to, he hadn’t snagged any titles. That is, until Saturday night at the Reno Livestock Events Center in Reno, Nevada. The Eagle Point, Oregon, trainer piloted Nics Black Diamond to a 217.5 in the rein work and 217 in the herd work for a 434.5 total to win the Open Hackamore.
