Gunnatrashya and Shawn Flarida Claim NRHA Open Derby Championship
The 2010 National Reining Horse Association Derby showcased the $155,000 added Open Derby finals on Saturday, June 26 at the Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Okla. The NRHA Derby Show paid out in excess of $600,000 in the derby and ancillary classes, and riders from eight countries were represented at the show this year.

NRBC Champion Custom Legend returns to the show pen
This fall horse enthusiasts from around the globe will be gathering in Lexington, Kentucky for the World Equestrian Games, which run from September 25 to October 10 at the newly overhauled Kentucky Horse Park. Held every 4 years, the WEG encompasses the world championships for 8 equestrian events, including reining. 2010 promises to be especially exciting, as several of the reining industry’s brightest stars are coming out of retirement to compete at this prestigious event.
Perhaps the most successful luminary to step back in the show pen is Custom Legend. Owned by Steve Simon, the nine year old stallion amassed $226,375 in NRHA events with NRHA million dollar rider Andrea Fappani at the helm. The handsome chestnut won the 2007 NRBC Open Championship via a historic run off in which he marked a 236.5- the highest recorded score in NRHA’s 43 year history (viewable at www.customcrome.com). That win was especially impressive, with Fappani riding with one arm in a sling thanks to shoulder surgery three weeks earlier. Fast forward to 2010, and the trainer is still one of the stallion’s biggest fans.

Mike Berg and Outta Dough Slide by Three NRHA Million Dollar Riders to Win the 2010 Cactus Reining Classic Open Derby |

Mike Berg and Outta Dough (Gallo Del Cielo X Dough Olena) owned by Dorothy Queen of Whitesboro, Texas, slid right by NRHA Million Dollar Riders Todd Bergen, Andrea Fappani and Randy Paul to win the 2010 Cactus Reining Classic $30,000 Open Derby. The run also earned the duo the $10,000 Intermediate Open Derby title as well, resulting in $15,669 in combined prize money for their near perfect performance. A total of 57 horse and rider combinations competed in the Open and Intermediate Derbies which were run concurrently. The lead changed hands several times from Bergen to Fappani and then to Paul, who all went early on in the draw. It looked like Randy Paul and Tinker With Diamonds (Like A Diamond X Tinker Nic) owned by Rancho Oso Rio, LLC of Scottsdale, Arizona had a lock on the title with a score of 226.5, until Berg of Temecula, California, going 48th in the draw, posted a score of 227.0.

Turnaround, Stop and Rollback with Tim McQuay |

Tim McQuay demonstrated guiding the horse to lope circles in response to neck rein. Circles are the foundation to how you direct the horse to lope, turn, and stop in correct position. To help nonpro reiners improve their horses, he shared his approach to schooling.
Stepping into the Turnaround
The guide builds toward the turnaround. In this maneuver, you also rely more on the rein than your leg. McQuay coached, “Use your rein, not your leg, to tell him to steer.”
When you practice the turnaround, envision what you expect. McQuay emphasized correct form first. The horse should crossover with his outside front foot, stepping over his inside foot.

Thanks to great media support, the National Reining Breeders Classic has enjoyed superb exposure in print, radio, and television media, so each year, the NRBC recognizes one outstanding media outlet or personality with the NRBC Media Award. That honoree is recognized in the arena, and presented with the signature Aysha Hoffman framed print that has become the hallmark of the award.
The NRBC announced in mid-October that Robert Chown, of Gainesville, Texas, will be the recipient in 2010. Chown is the host of the award-winning television show Wide World of Horses. "I was very surprised and honored to receive this award.
